Weight Loss treatments

Wegovy is the brand name for semaglutide, a prescription medication used primarily for weight management. It was developed by Novo Nordisk and has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for chronic weight management in adults who are obese or overweight and have at least one weight-related health condition, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.

How Wegovy Works:

Wegovy is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist, which means it mimics the action of a hormone called GLP-1 in the body. GLP-1 is naturally produced in the gut and plays a role in regulating blood sugar levels, appetite, and food intake. When you use Wegovy, it has the following effects:

  1. Appetite Suppression: It helps reduce hunger by acting on areas of the brain that control appetite, leading to a decreased desire to eat.
  2. Slowed Gastric Emptying: It slows down the rate at which food leaves the stomach, which contributes to feeling full for longer periods.
  3. Improved Blood Sugar Control: Although Wegovy is not specifically approved for managing type 2 diabetes (this is the role of a similar medication called Ozempic), it can have an effect on lowering blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.

Uses of Wegovy:

Wegovy is prescribed for:

  • Weight management: For adults who are obese (with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher) or overweight (with a BMI of 27 or higher) and have at least one weight-related health condition.
  • Long-term weight loss: When combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, Wegovy can help people lose a significant amount of weight and maintain that loss over time.

Dosage:

Wegovy is typically administered as a subcutaneous injection (under the skin) once a week. The dose starts low and is gradually increased over several weeks to reduce the likelihood of side effects and help the body adjust. The typical dosing schedule starts at 0.25 mg per week, eventually increasing to a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg per week.

Effectiveness:

Clinical studies have shown that Wegovy can help people lose significant amounts of weight. On average, people can lose 10-15% of their body weight over 68 weeks when combined with diet and exercise.

Potential Side Effects:

Like all medications, Wegovy can have side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Common side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache
